From Lady Levi's to an American Icon

In 1934, Levi Strauss & Co. introduced the 701, also known as Lady Levi's—the first five-pocket jeans designed specifically for women. Its high rise and curved fit marked an important moment in the history of women's denim.

Denim gained further cultural visibility during the 1950s. The high-waisted silhouettes associated with Hollywood's golden age helped establish jeans as more than practical clothing: they became a symbol of confidence, independence, and modern American style.

The MBBCAR Interpretation

A More Structured Take on the Classic 701 Silhouette

The vintage Levi's 701 is one of the best-known references in women's denim. Original 1950s versions were made from comparatively lightweight denim and were recognized for their high waist and feminine, curve-following shape.

For the MBBCAR Monroe Denim Collection, we chose a heavier 14oz denim to create a more structured silhouette. The additional weight gives the jeans greater presence while allowing each fit to soften, fade, and develop its own character through wear.
